Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a wonderful time of year for parties, decorations, children dressed up in costumes, and lots of candy! While it is a favourite time of year for most, this holiday can be very scary for your pet.

Here are some things to be aware of around Halloween to keep your pets safe.

Candy/Chocolate

Chocolate and candy can cause a variety of problems for your pets, including toxicities from chocolate and candy with xylitol (sweetener) in it. Pancreatitis from sugary and fatty treats or gastrointestinal blockages (foreign body) from wrappers can require a veterinary visit. Make sure your kids aren’t hiding their treat bags in their room where your pet can easily get them. Keep all treats in a safe place.

Decorations

Keep an eye on your pet if you put up decorations in your house. If your pets are curious and like to chew on new things, it can lead to stomach upset like vomiting and diarrhea or can lead to a foreign body.

Costumes

Dressing your pets up in costumes can be fun, and there is a safe way to pick one for them. The animal costume must not be too tight that it is restricting their movement but not too loose that they can trip on it and injure themselves. Avoid covering any of their senses like eyes and ears. Even if you do all this, your pet might still hate having the costume on. If this is the case take it off them before it causes too much stress.

Trick or Treaters

When you hand out candy at home to trick or treaters, have your pets safely away from the door for the evening. Your pets might be scared of all the people coming to the door in costumes; they could bolt out the door. Keep your pets in a bedroom or in their crates where they are safe and away from potential danger.

Fireworks

Keep in mind there will be fireworks and loud noises throughout Halloween. If your pets are scared of fireworks, ensure they are in a safe, quiet place in the house. Contact Lomsnes Veterinary Hospital if you would like to discuss safe options for anxiety in your pet.

Outdoor Pets

Please try and keep your pets inside for at least 24 hours around Halloween. With extra traffic on the roads and people walking around in costumes, there are higher risk pets can be put in danger if they are wandering.

Keep these safety tips in mind for the next Halloween season to make it an enjoyable holiday for your pet!
