Senior Cats for Senior People

The seniors that are living in care facilities and/or homes have left many of their cherished belongings behind. This involves not only materialistic things but loving, family pets as well. Many senior facilities now understand the importance of the animal-human bond and over 40% of senior facilities in North America allow live in animals. Majority of animals in senior homes are cats! Cats fit perfectly into a senior’s lifestyle. This is because cats are low maintenance, people are rarely nervous or frightened of them, cats love to mingle and cuddle, and cats live longer with less medical issues than dogs.

Animals are a critical part of our society, and their interaction with people has helped fulfill the lives of many. Science has proven that animals have a positive effect on people’s emotional, psychological and physical state. These positive effects have been even more evident to seniors.

To list a few benefits:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Decreases heart rate
  • Decreases stress levels
  • Calming effects having a cat curled up on your lap
  • Decrease cholesterol
  • Increases movement and exercise
  • Decreases depression
  • Eases loneliness
  • Provides a sense of responsibility
  • Fills the day with a sense of purpose, and so much more!

Senior cats for senior people has proven its success. As a veterinarian at Lomsnes Veterinary Hospital, I am a strong supporter of animals living with seniors and will always be an advocate for promoting the love of animals and people in senior facilities.
